Gym Confidence 101

Everything you were afraid to ask — answered.

Beginner-friendly guides for the stuff no one explains. Read these before your first visit and half the fear disappears.

What to do when you walk in

Walk in, take a breath, and look around. That's it for the first minute. Find the locker room, the water fountain, and a quiet corner. You're not here to perform — you're here to get familiar.

What machines actually do

Machines guide your movement along a fixed path, so you don't have to balance — perfect when you're learning. Each one targets a specific muscle group. Pick two to start; you don't need to know them all.

How to adjust a machine

Every machine has a pin or a lever for the seat. Set it so the joint the machine works aligns with its pivot point. Not sure? That's what staff are for — it's literally their job to help you.

What to bring

A water bottle, a small towel, and comfortable clothes. A lock if your gym has lockers. That's it. You don't need fancy gear, gloves, or a special bag — just yourself and some water.

What to wear

Whatever you can move in comfortably. Leggings, shorts, a t-shirt, a supportive bra. Nothing needs to match. Nothing needs to be new. If you can sit down and stand up in it, it's gym clothes.

How long your first workout needs to be

Twenty minutes. Maybe fifteen. The goal of your first workout is to have a first workout — not to change your life. Leave while you still feel good. Coming back matters more than how long you stayed.

What to do if you don't know how to use something

Ask. Ask the front desk, ask a trainer, ask the person resting near it. Gyms are full of people who once didn't know either. No one worth listening to will judge you for a question.

When someone's using the equipment you wanted

Wait, or ask to 'work in' between their sets. Or just pick something else — there's always another way to move. You will never lose by being flexible with your plan.

Gym etiquette — without the intimidation

There are really only three rules: put your weights back, wipe down what you used, and don't hog a machine while staring at your phone. That's it. You're already doing better than half the gym.
